Audio cassette transfer requires a level of mechanical precision that consumer tape decks simply cannot achieve. The relationship between the tape head and the tape itself — specifically the azimuth angle — varies from cassette to cassette depending on which machine originally recorded it. A misaligned azimuth produces dull, muffled audio with reduced stereo separation.

Our transfer infrastructure uses three-head cassette decks that allow simultaneous recording and playback monitoring — a critical capability for detecting problems in real-time. Before each cassette is transferred, a technician manually adjusts the azimuth alignment to match the specific recording characteristics of that tape, maximising high-frequency response and stereo imaging.

The analogue output is routed through a carefully calibrated conversion stage that captures the full dynamic range of the tape signal without introducing digital artefacts. For tapes recorded with Dolby B or Dolby C noise reduction, we apply the correct decoding to restore the intended frequency response — many consumer decks either lack Dolby decoding or apply it incorrectly, producing unnaturally bright or dull results.

For damaged tapes — snapped sections, crumpled leaders, or failed splices — our technicians perform precision repairs using archival splicing materials and a calibrated splicing block. We salvage every possible second of audio.
