VHS tapes were engineered for a 20-year lifespan — most are now well past 30. The magnetic oxide particles that hold your recordings are bonded to a polyester base with a polyurethane binder. Over time, this binder absorbs moisture from the air through a process called hydrolysis, causing the oxide layer to become sticky and unstable.
The result is "sticky shed syndrome" — the tape literally sticks to the playback heads, shedding brown oxide residue and producing a characteristic squealing sound. Even before this critical stage, signal degradation is continuous: tracking errors multiply, colour saturation fades, luminance drops, and audio develops increasing levels of dropout and distortion.
Tapes stored in attics, garages, or anywhere with temperature fluctuation deteriorate fastest. Mould growth is common in humid environments and can permanently damage the tape surface within a single season. And the equipment to play them — VCR machines — is no longer manufactured. The last mass-production line closed in 2016.

Every VHS tape that arrives at our lab enters a controlled restoration pipeline before any digitisation begins. We don't simply press play and record — we prepare each tape to yield the best possible signal from a medium that was never designed for archival longevity.
Our playback infrastructure uses broadcast-specification VCRs from the JVC SR series — machines originally built for television studio environments where signal integrity was non-negotiable. These decks feature superior head assemblies, wider frequency response, and dramatically lower noise floors compared to consumer VCRs. The output is routed through external time base correctors that stabilise the signal, eliminating the jitter, flagging, and frame instability that plague aged tapes.
For tapes exhibiting sticky shed syndrome, we use a carefully controlled low-temperature conditioning process to temporarily re-stabilise the binder layer — giving us a window to extract a clean transfer before the tape degrades further. This process requires precise humidity and temperature management and cannot be safely performed at home.
